This attention to grade-level compatibility is one of the most attractive features of Writing Aids.
Writing Aids has assignments for a great variety of genres of writing divided up for each grade level of 1stth grades. Grading Strategies guide parents through the often difficult waters of evaluating students's work.
How Does This Work?
On the CD-ROM are a number of blank student supplement pages, ranging from Venn diagrams, story maps, characterization grids, various outline forms, and more. I print this and keep in a binder for my son. See our honest review of Tapestry of Grace.
It took some time to get familiar with it, but now I can breeze through my weekly planning with no trouble. Topics include analytical essays, character sketches, editorials, self-proofing, senior thesis, transition words and sentences, and much, much more.Parents guide their students through prewriting exercises, the significance and purpose of the various types of writing, how to organize their papers, etc. I mentioned in the cons section that ToG is a very expensive program. Tapestry of Grace is a great choice for families with older students, who want to give their kids a thorough classical education, but would love guidance and personal growth in the process. It includes all the government documents they will study over the course of the year. Also the layout of the guide took some time to get used to. A dear friend had been telling me for a few years how much her family loved Tapestry of Grace , and I could see the results in her son. I print these out and keep them in a binder for my son. Grading strategies provide rubrics and forms for parents to know how to evalutate student work.
It includes all the government documents they will study over the course of the year. I also have daily discussions with my children about their readings for the day.It has descriptions of the different writing assignments found in the guides. Writing Aids is not a tool for teaching grammar or spelling. For my daughter in the dialectic stage, I was able to find almost all of her books at the library. Students will definitely grow in their writing abilities, but there will still be much room for improvement. This will be especially helpful for those not using TOG who need to determine when they might use different lessons. Topics include analytical essays, character sketches, editorials, self-proofing, senior thesis, transition words and sentences, and much, much more. The way Tapestry of Grace has influenced my children has been the most impressive benefit.
The Writing Aids book has a unique binding that makes it very easy to work with. I knew I would need a curriculum that could guide me as I redeemed my own education. For my high schooler, he will earn credits in six subjects using Tapestry: history, literature, government, church history, art history, and philosophy. For every teacher section in the book there's a printout on the CD-ROM for students called "Talking Points" which kids keep in a notebook and refer to during the instruction period and while completing their assignments. Let me give you an example: In Year 2, Week 13 the students are learning about the Age of Exploration. The Writing Aids book serves as a teacher's guide, while the CD has student pages and grading rubrics that you can print from your home computer. The two actually work very well together. The best part? Once I got the physical copy in my hand though, I realized that it is such a simple layout and very easy to follow.
